Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) seeks to enhance the responsible development and use of Canada’s natural resources and the competitiveness of Canada’s natural resources products.
After a nation-wide scientific assessment on climate change, the Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Division (CCIAD) at Natural Resources Canada required a set of publications to report their findings to senior science decision makers, planners, engineers, climate researchers, media and the general public. The bilingual Scientific Report consisting of 286 pages and a collection of over 300 resource materials needed to be available in print, as well as by accessible PDF in compliance to the WCAG 2.0 standards. Despite the dense content matter, the publication needed to be modern, clean and easy to follow.
Creatrix Design Group used lighter fonts to attain a fresh clean look. The hierarchy achieved in the design allows for readers to easily find and read through content. The structure of the content was implemented in a way that would allow for the creation of online PDF files in both French and English, adhering to the WCAG 2.0 accessibility guidelines. Furthermore, Creatrix offered a solution to the problem of existing illustrations by re-drawing the illustrations to match the style of the publication and to meet the accessibility standards. In order to be inclusive, cover photos were carefully chosen to represent all four seasons, climate change, and a variety of industries.
